National Pet Month: Why having a pet is good for people living with dementia

Every year, we celebrate National Pet Month in the United Kingdom in the month of April. This is a time to celebrate the joy and companionship that pets bring to our lives.

At Rosebank, we understand the importance of pets in the lives of our residents, and we are proud to celebrate this special occasion with them.

Pets are shown to have many positive benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia. Here are a few ways in which animal therapy can be good for our residents:

Companionship:

Pets can provide residents with a sense of companionship and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. For many residents who may have limited interaction with others, having a pet around can be a real source of comfort.

Stress relief:

Spending time with animals can help reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being. This is particularly important for residents who may be dealing with health issues or other challenges.

Increased social interaction:

Pets can be a great icebreaker, helping residents connect with one another and engage in social activities. This can help build a sense of community within the care home.

Physical activity:

Caring for a pet can provide residents with opportunities for physical activity and exercise, such as taking a dog for a walk or playing with a cat.

Cognitive stimulation:

Caring for a pet can also provide residents with cognitive stimulation, helping to keep their minds active and engaged. This can be particularly important for residents with dementia or other cognitive impairments.

At Rosebank, we understand that having a pet can be a big responsibility and that not all of our residents are able to care for a pet themselves. However, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to have the companionship of their beloved pet. That’s why we try to accommodate any pets that our residents have or want to have and make sure that they are well cared for at our home

We also welcome and encourage visits from family pets, as they brighten up our home and provide endless amounts of joy.
